Deck the Halls

Upload a photo of any house. Pick a theme. Then drag the slider until the electrical grid files a complaint.

A quiet snow-covered suburban street at night, every roofline outlined in warm white lights under a starry sky

One ordinary brick ranch

Every picture below started as the same unremarkable daytime snapshot — gray sky, sedan in the driveway, trash bin at the curb. Then we start sprucing it up for the season.

The photo, cleaned up

Dusk, stars, lit windows. Car and trash bin gone. Same house.

A galleon has run aground on the front lawn.

There is an octopus on the roof. Nobody asked it to add the water caustics.

Five settings

Each one is written by hand, so every notch is a visible event rather than a slightly brighter version of the last.

  1. 1
    Tasteful
A clean roofline. The HOA has no notes.
  2. 2
    Festive
Wreath's up. The neighbors nod approvingly.
  3. 3
    Enthusiastic
There is a plan, and the plan is more.
  4. 4
    Unhinged
Cars slow down. Someone has filed a complaint.
  5. 5
    Call the Utility Company
The house is no longer lit. The house is the light.

Nine themes

The theme decides both the bulbs on the roofline and what turns up on the lawn.

🎄

Classic Christmas

The one your grandmother would approve of.

🥁

Nutcracker Suite

Toy soldiers, sugarplums, and a slightly menacing jaw.

🍪

Gingerbread Village

Your house, but edible-looking. Do not lick the siding.

💚

The Grinch

Crooked, green, and stealing the show.

🏴‍☠️

Pirate Christmas

Yo ho ho and a string of C9s.

🚂

Polar Express

All aboard. The lawn is now a rail yard.

🪼

Deep Sea

Bioluminescence, but make it festive.

🦌

Deep Forest

Somewhere between cozy and enchanted.

🌌

Northern Lights

Arctic, glacial, and quietly showing off.

What this actually is

A demo, and an experiment, by @johannahendrix. The whole app was built over the course of one YouTube video, which is below if you want to watch it happen. One of the hardest parts of decorating a real photo is not making it pretty — it is leaving the house exactly as is, and only adding the decoration, in a realistic way.

So every render runs the preservation rules twice: once to convert the photo to dusk, and again to hang the lights. Sometimes the result is genuinely beautiful. Sometimes it builds a gingerbread archway in front of the door that's too small for an adult to fit through. The fun is in exploring possibilities.

Building this app, start to finish. Watch it on YouTube.
